Department of Road Traffic Planning and Road Traffic Engineering

The teaching and research area Road Traffic Planning and Road Traffic Engineering was established in 1976 at the Department of Civil Engineering of the Bergische Universität - GH Wuppertal under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Stolz. Since August 1, 1999, Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Gerlach has taken over the management of the teaching and research area.

Currently, besides Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ing. Jürgen Gerlach, seven scientific and one non-scientific employee as well as several student assistants are working on numerous national and international research projects in different fields of traffic research and especially in the field of traffic safety. Prof. Gerlach is also a delegate in the PIARC Committee Safer Road Infrastructure and editor of the Journal for Road Safety.

For the teaching and research area Road Traffic Planning and Road Traffic Engineering (LuFG SVPT), the integrated view within the framework of urban, regional and traffic planning as well as the interrelationships between people, traffic and the environment with a focus on road safety is in the foreground of all activities. The research activities at LuFG SVPT refer to the integrated consideration of all transport systems, the linking of sectoral planning as well as to the interrelations between settlement structure, social, economic, financial and spatial planning and transport.

The field of activity of the teaching and research area Road Traffic Planning and Road Traffic Engineering covers all issues in the area of individual traffic in the areas of teaching, research and project work. Special emphasis is placed on the practical applicability of teaching and research. The following fields of activity can be regarded as the scope of the teaching and research area:

  • Integrated urban and traffic planning
  • Design and dimensioning of traffic facilities
  • Traffic safety
  • Network planning and design
  • Traffic model calculation
  • Traffic system / mobility management
  • Traffic engineering and traffic control
  • Environmental protection and environmental planning
  • Noise control, mobility research

The teaching and research area is assigned to the Transport Center of the University of Wuppertal. Further professorships of the center of expertise are the teaching and research areas:
